Methods of Creativity

“Better to do something imperfectly than to do nothing flawlessly.”
- Robert Schuller
The Way I Wrote
I found myself always doing my writing on the computer the past year. It’s fast, simple and the corrections are easily done on the fly. When I write on paper (or a sketchbook in this situation), I found it cumbersome, time consuming and simply annoying. I think to myself that all this stuff will have to retyped on the computer and I’ll lose so much time doing the same task twice.
Well, that’s what I thought back then.
Writing on the iPhone
When I made several attempts to do some of my entries on the iPhone, I found this is very unsuitable for long entries. I can only see a few lines at a time, and typing on the small buttons can be annoying (though it helps to have an auto-correction feature). I think it’s only useful if I need to make an emergency entry and only that.
Writing with Pen and Paper
For this entry, I didn’t have a computer on hand and wasn’t eager to write it on the iPhone (besides the battery was a bit low), so I wrote this with pen and paper. While I was writing, I realized a few things. Until we have the tech that allows us to write and draw quickly, the old means will persist and thrive. I’m sure technology will reach a certain point to make this obsolete (maybe it’s already there with the iPad, but I don’t know).
It’s been quite enjoyable to be able to see all of my writing on one page. It’s also been a nice change to be away from the glowing screen that is slowly ruining my eyes bit by bit.
The Ways of being Creative
Creativity can be cultivated and done in so many different ways. As an artist and teacher, the tools and methods are there for us to use and not vice versa. While we can be recommended and encouraged to try something new and different, in the end, the choice will always made by the user. We should not be dictated unless we want to.
A Little Rusty at Drawing
I can’t believe how much I am out of it. I’m not exactly an extrodinary artist, but boy, do I feel rusty and unkempt! I feel like gagging when I’m drawing each line. I know the stuff I’m making is crap, but if I don’t continue to try, refine, learn and go at it again, I’ll give up completely.
I must persist and create because it’s fun.
Things to Consider for Today:
-
There’s no one path of being creative.
-
Find the best path for you.
-
If you’re afraid your stuff is gonna be crap, that’s okay. There’s a lot of crap out there.
-
Take comfort you’re not alone.
-
If you want to get to the good stuff, you got to make a lot of crap.
-
Remember, even Mozart, Einstein and Disney made crap.
-
Crap crap crap crap crap…. GOOOOOOD!

Good post.
It sounds to me like 2011 is already off to a good start.
Keep going!
